HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BOB SEGER - Long before the billbo HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BOB SEGER - Long before the billboards and stadium roar, before the record executives pretended they understood him, there was a skinny Detroit kid with a busted up guitar, a head full of Chuck Berry, and the kind of Midwestern stubbornness that can outlast a winter or a war. He was playing grimy coffee houses and asphalt stained VFW halls in the early ’60s while the country was still pretending innocence existed. Around ’61 or ’62, depending on which worn out road tale you trust, Seger plugged himself into the electric madness of Detroit’s garage band scene the same wild ecosystem that would later spit out the MC5, Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, Glenn Frey and every raw nerve that thought rock could save their soul.

Over five decades later, the man is still standing. For more than half a century, this Michigan born scribe of the American working class gave the anonymous masses a goddamn microphone. He sang for factory hands and restless dreamers, for truckers barreling down I-75 at 3 a.m. with nicotine shakes and busted transmissions, for kids who grew up thinking someday the road would open into something holy. His songs carried the gravel and gasoline of the heartland the romance, the exhaustion, the heartbreak, and the defiant hope that maybe tomorrow would come with just a little more mercy. Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band built a legacy carved from truth. Not the polished truth of marketing departments and brand strategies no beautiful and muddy truth of being alive in America.

Mr. Seger is still a symbol: part rebel & part weary prophet of blue collar dreams. Still.. like a rock.
